Abstract

Background. Recently Russian researchers’ interest to the English drama of Elizabethian times, represented not only by Shakespeare’s creative work but also by his talented predecessors and contemporaries’ works, has become acute. Among them Christopher Marlowe, whose jubilee – 450 years since his birthday – is celebrated in 2014, played an important part. The purpose of the article is the analysis of A. T. Parfenov’s (1930–1996) conception of Christopher Marlowe’s creative work evolution, which was formulated at the beginning of the 1960-s and greatly differed from views on the dramatist’s literary heritage, represented in the works of other West European and native scientists.
Materials and methods. The materials for the analysis were A. T. Parfenov’s printed works devoted to Christopher Marlowe’s creative work and published in the 1960–1980-s. The comparative-historical, comparative-typological and biographical methods of research are used in the article.
Results. The article considers essential for the conception understanding pathos of liberating a personality, accepting new knowledge, skeptical attitude to dogmas, the process of individual development in absolute striving to self-understanding and self-affirmation, realization of the zenith of beauty, feelings and powers of a free person. It pays special attention to underlined by A. T. Parfenov systematic interrelation of single episodes from Marlowe’s works and facts of his biography. It shows the periodization of the English dramatist’s creative work, suggested by the researcher, based on preference of the high Renaissance heroes at the first stage and the tendency to overcome contradictions of humanistic individualism in the last tragedies.
Conclusions. The research establishes peculiarities of A. T. Parfenov’s pioneering conception in comparison with his predecessors’ works allowing to speak about the researcher’s essential contribution into the study of Shakespearian drama, relevance of his theses in our days.
